Last week was a busy one with two weddings. The crazy part was the fact my blogs server didn’t want me to publish anything. Not even wedding blogs. So that means this week needs to be extra special.
If you’re just tuning in, two weeks ago I started a series called “Fresh Face Friday”. If you follow this link it will take you to the introduction to the series AND one of my all-time fav products for getting and maintaining a fresh face.
I’m going to throw at you some knowledge about something you probably don’t think to make a priority in your beauty routine… that thing is your lips.
Shockingly I think your lips are one of the biggest features on your face. They outline your smile, are a symbol of intimacy, and can tell you a lot about your current health routine. If dry and cracked then you’re less likely to smile because it hurts. If dry and cracked, you’re less likely to feel confidence and I highly doubt you want to kiss someone. Then if dry and cracked, it could be your body’s way of telling you that you’re dehydrated, have a vitamin deficiency, or even that your toothpaste has too much sulfate in it.
A few things you can do to avoid unhealthy lips is to drink water (lots of it!), take a daily vitamin, and the easiest thing: WEAR LIP BALM!
Now I’m a huge lip balm user. I’ve tried it all. Burts Bees, Chapstick, Jersey Shore Cosmetics, Carmex, Nivea, and my biggest issue and that the relief and results they gave were so temporary. That, or I’d find myself using the product ever 5 minutes. The answer lies in the ingredients. Dermatologist Leslie Baumann, MD said, “Lip balms with humectants such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin make lips worse. These ingredients pull moisture out of the skin, especially in a dry environment, and then the water evaporates away.” Confusing, considering we regularly apply these ingredients to our face to keep it well-hydrated. But here’s the thing: humectant ingredients need to be offset by occlusive ingredients to work their moisturizing magic. Occlusive agents, like beeswax, shea butter, and various oils, create a physical barrier to prevent water loss. “Humectants hold on to water, and occlusives keep it from evaporating,” explains Dr. Baumann. Without occlusives, the moisture that the humectants pull out simply vanishes on the surface of the skin, leaving lips drier than they were in the first place (source).
Now if you’re me, you don’t have time to read every chapstick label in hopes that you’ll find the perfect one. Plus after buying a few different brands, the cost racks up. After years and years of buying and losing every tube of chapstick, lip balm, everything, I finally found the holy grail.
Meet the Peppermint Lip Balm by Skin Food.
This stuff is amazing because not only do I know it doesn’t have harsh chemicals, I know that what I’m putting on my lips not only benefits the lips themselves, but also benefits the skin around it. I’ve been using this lip balm for about 6 months now and I can’t remember the last time I had chapped lips. Even my husband and friends have their own and have made it a key part to their daily routine. I apply it once in the morning and once at night… always after I brush my teeth. Rarely, but sometimes, I may apply around lunch if I’ve been in the sun all day or if it’s winter and the winds are kicking my butt.
Since it uses castor oil and coconut oil, the balm itself is very long lasting. You definitely don’t put it on and then 5 minutes later not feel it there. Castor oil is pretty thick so I use it for many things since you can actually feel it set in and create a more long-lasting moisturizer.
Another thing I love is the packaging. It’s not too skinny and it’s not too fat. The tube is the size where you’re not going to lose it. Skin Food has many options including GIMME A BEET and TOMATO which can provide you with a hydrating tint!
I can’t rave about this product and the important of fresh lips enough. Even for those with braces, you will be so happy to have soft lips that don’t get caught in your brackets. Lastly not to mention those who are avid lipstick and stain users... lip care is key!
